We talk a lot these days about information technology, but how useful is it to us? Is information all that we want? Is more information better? Information is part of a logical hierarchy. As humans we work to make our experience meaningful through various processes and stages that transform raw experience ultimately into wisdom. Things are - whether we take notice of them or not. As we notice and observe we turn these proto-facts into FACTS. By collecting facts we can generate DATA which can then be collated to provide us with INFORMATION. Information needs to be contrasted and compared and assimilated into a context in order that it should become KNOWLEDGE. By accumulating and integrating knowledge in one context we develop our ability to understand others - the basis of WISDOM.
To move up this hierarchy is to engage in the process of meaning making. |
